(4 min) Healing Miso Soup

Simple, warming and soul soothing. It literally can’t get easier than this! I found myself sick with the flu the other week, luckily it happened when my mother was visiting me in NYC, and she whipped up this delicious, wholesome soup that made me feel alive again (how do mom’s always manage to do that?!). When I was feeling better I asked for the recipe and was surprised to find it took approx. 4 minutes. The flavor of the miso is so deep, it makes you feel as though someone has been cooking the broth for hours, and the nutritional benefits from the few additional ingredients will make sure you ward off sicknesses for a long time. For you busy mammas out there, trust me on this one. It’s going to be your new lunch or dinner staple.

The Ingredients:
(1 serving- I generally make individual bowls if there are guests)

¼ tsp grated garlic (approx. half a pod - just enough garlic is healing, too much may upset your stomach)
½ tsp grated ginger
1.5 tbsp of mellow miso paste (I prefer the Miso Master Organic Brand)
Romaine Lettuce (2-3 leaves)
2 cups boiling water (Option: No salt added veggie/chicken/bone broth)
1 tsp quality olive oil
Fresh ground pepper (to taste)

The process:

  1. Grate ginger & garlic into the soup bowl

2. Add 1.5 tbsp of miso paste to bowl and cover with an inch of hot water. This allows you to dissolve the miso paste in the small amount of water - the water will become cloudy and look saturated.

  • The reason we add the hot water to miso (off gas), instead of miso to boiling water is so that you don’t kill off the probiotics & health benefits in the miso.

3. Slice lettuce and add to miso soup

4. Top with tsp olive oil & fresh ground pepper

  • Additional Toppings optional: Soft Boiled Egg

Miso Notes:

  1. If you’re making this for a larger party, the general rule of thumb is 1.5 tbsp of miso to 2/2½ cups of water

  2. If you don’t eat it right away the miso may settle to the bottom. Give it a quick whirl to re-incorporate and enjoy!

This is a perfect winter meal, or perhaps even an appetizer for an intimate dinner party. Don’t miss out on the healing benefits (and deliciousness) of Miso - Enjoy, Friends!
